Upcoming Music & Arts Events

Friday May 7th: Lisa Purinton: New Prints
Opening reception at Mayo Street Arts
5:30-8:30pm.

Saturday May 8th: Second Saturday Jazz Session with Alan Lowe and friends. Alto saxophonist Allen Lowe leads a quartet in a program of essentially blues forms. Lowe, who has a CD set to come out next fall with Roswell Rudd and Matt Shipp, is a veteran of New York's 1990s Knitting Factory scene, where he recorded with Julius Hemphill, Don Byron, and David Murray. The VIllage Voice has described his playing as "suggesting both Sonny Rollins at  his most jocular and Jimmy Giuffre at his most rustic…his music reflects a fullness of experience missing from the etudes of those who have made jazz the sound of no surprise." Anthony Braxton has called Lowe "an American master." Flappers, jazz musicians & wannabees should bring an instrument to sit in with the band. 8pm.

Friday May 14th: Pine Smoke Lodge, Tom Kay, Leif Sherman Curtis 8pm.

Saturday May 15: Okbari Middle Eastern Ensemble with Josie Conte - Bellydance.

The Okbari Middle Eastern Ensemble presents music from the richly varied contemporary and historic cultural traditions of the Middle East including Ottoman Turkish Classical compositions, rural Turkish folk and devotional songs, Arabic classical and folk music, and dance music from the Armenian and Turkish immigrant diasporas. 8pm.

Thursday May 20th: Pearl and the Beard, Tiger Saw, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper 9pm.
Pearl and the Beard is three voices, one cello, one guitar, one glockenspiel, one melodica, several drums, one accordion, ninety-six teeth, and one soul.
Former strangers Jocelyn Mackenzie, Emily Hope Price, and Jeremy Styles were united in the great city of New York. Each had migrated there from a far corner of the nation with naught but food in their pockets and money in their bellies. Each had the same true love. Since then, the three have nested, and their unique brand of brightly melodic songcraft continues to blossom of its own accord.
Friday May 21st: Kit Demos with Kevin Frenette and Forbes Graham 8pm.

Thursday May 27th: Netherfriends and Aleric Vince Nez
. 9pm.
"Netherfriends is the amalgamation of experimental field recordings,
solid pop melody, and vocal harmonies, or as You Ain’t No Picasso
said, “…wicked smart pop music that’s bone simple with a fantastic
melody. With extensive touring planned, a new EP, Calling You Out, as well as
a recent Daytrotter Session, Netherfriends is poised to be the band
you wish you could say you heard first."  http://www.myspace.com/netherfriends
Aleric Vince Nez plays solo and in several Portland bands including his own creations. He sings and plays guitar, musical saw, accordion, drums, and guitarron. His songs are original, catchy, and haunting - always a treat.

Friday May 28th: LIT: Our monthly literary happening. This month's theme:
Awhirl: An evening of Rumi - Words, music, and movement celebrating the ecstatic 13th-century Sufi poet and mystic.Spirited recitations – middle eastern melodies – communal whirling. Hosted by Megan Grumbling. 8 pm.
